5 Ways to Get Your Home Ready For Winter

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, it’s time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. A little preparation can help prevent costly repairs, increase your home’s energy efficiency, and keep your family comfortable all winter. We share some essential home maintenance tasks and recommend home improvement upgrades to help you maximize your time indoors this winter.

1. Seal Your Home

Keep warm air where you want it most – inside your home. Drafty windows and doors can let cold air in and drive up your heating bills. Seal cracks and gaps to ensure your home stays cozy without overworking your heating system this winter. Replace damaged weatherstripping and caulk any gaps around windows and doors.

2. Perform Heating System Maintenance

A well-maintained heating system will help keep your family warm and comfortable throughout the winter and ensure its running efficiency. Check to see if the furnace filter needs to be replaced, schedule an HVAC tuneup, and consider installing a smart thermostat to save energy and lower heating bills. If you have a fireplace or a wood stove, arrange to have the chimney cleaned and inspected.

3. Improve Insulation & Airflow

Proper insulation can help keep warm air inside your home and minimize drafts, making your home more comfortable and energy-efficient. If necessary, add attic insulation and apply window film as a temporary fix to old inefficient windows. Ensure air vents and registers are clear of furniture and rugs for proper airflow.

4. Plan Winter Home Improvements

Winter offers the perfect opportunity to refresh your interior walls, cabinets, doors, and trim. Consider replacing light fixtures or installing new flooring. Heating flooring in the bathroom can take your home comfort to the next level and keep you extra cozy this winter.

5. Stock Up on Winter Essentials

Ensure your family is fully equipped with the necessary heating supplies (firewood, pellets, and propane) and prepared for the first snowfall. Have a flashlight or lantern with batteries on hand in case of an emergency. Have easy access to snow removal tools, snow shovels, and supplies.
