How To Build A Patio

Extend your living space outdoors by building your very own patio. Our team of building experts can help provide the materials, tools, and expertise needed for a successful project. Keep reading to find out how to build a patio in your backyard to relax and unwind, or entertain friends and family this summer:

Getting Started

Before you start digging or laying pavers, take time to plan your patio carefully. A building permit may be required to build a patio in Sault Ste. Marie. When choosing a location, consider shade, proximity to your house, and the appropriate size for your needs. Measure the area carefully and mark the patio’s perimeter with stakes and string or line-marking paint

Choosing Patio Materials

The material you use for your patio will depend on your desired style and budget. Do you want a classic brick patio, modern concrete pavers, or paving stones? You’ll also need to decide on a laying pattern. Lyons & Island TIMBER MART have a huge range of patio materials available, so you can find the perfect style for your patio design.

Gathering Your Tools & Supplies

Once you have decided on a patio material, head in-store to order the required quantity and arrange pick-up or delivery. You will likely need gravel or crushed stone for the base, polymeric sand for joints, paver edging, a shovel, rake, a compactor or tamper, level, rubber mallet, broom, and a pair of durable kneepads

Once you have everything you need, follow these instructions:

1. Prepare the Base

Clear the area of grass, roots, and debris, then excavate about 6- 8 inches deep to allow space for the base materials. Add a 4-6 inch layer of gravel or crushed stone and use a tamper to compact the base tightly, creating a stable foundation. Spread about 1 inch of sand over the gravel. Use a long, straight piece of wood to level it out smoothly. This layer will help you set your chosen patio material evenly.

2. Lay Your Patio Material

Start from a corner or edge and work your way out. Carefully place each patio slab or alternative material on the sand, leaving small gaps between them. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap each piece into place, periodically checking that everything is level.

3. Finishing Touches

Install edging around the patio’s perimeter to keep the pavers or bricks from shifting over time. Secure the edging firmly. Sweep sand or polymeric sand into the gaps between your chosen patio material to lock each piece in place and help prevent weed growth. Lastly, spray the patio lightly with water to settle the sand. After it dries, add your outdoor furniture, planters, and lighting to create the perfect outdoor retreat!

Building a patio might seem like a big task, but with the right tools, materials, and a clear plan, it’s a fairly easy intermediate DIY project! Stop by your closest Lyons & Island TIMBER MART location for expert advice and quality supplies to make your patio project a breeze.
