Spring has sprung, which means it’s time to make the most of the longer days and get your backyard in order. Use these four garden maintenance tips to prepare your backyard for the warmer weather, so you can start creating your own outdoor oasis.

1. Tend to your lawn
Ensure your lawnmower is ready for the season and sharpen the blades if necessary. Rake up dead and matted leaves from the lawn and aerate your lawn to encourage new growth. If the weather permits, give your lawn its first haircut of the season before applying fertilizer. We recommend mowing the lawn every five days in early spring for a fuller, more lush lawn.
2. Clean Up the Yard
Once the snow melts, you’ll start noticing new growth. Pull out any young weeds while the ground is still soft. Clear away dead growth from garden beds and flower pots and start thinking about what you want to plant once the weather warms up.
3. Prune and Prep with Garden Maintenance
Check your trees for dead branches. If safe to do so, prune back the trees, or call in a professional tree trimmer to help prevent damage to your property. Prune back summer-flowering shrubs to promote growth. Apply fertilizer around trees, shrubs and perennials. Edge your garden beds with a hand or power tool and prepare the area for high-quality mulch.
4. Prepare Your Deck or Patio
Use a pressure washer or elbow grease to remove dirt and grime from your deck or patio. Hose down patio furniture and once dry, rearrange and decorate. Consider upgrading your outdoor furniture or adding shade with a gazebo or sail. Elevate your space with an outdoor rug and new throw cushions, then fire up the barbeque for the first outdoor feast of the season.
