DIY: How to Build a Pallet Christmas Tree
From cedar wreaths with candy cane striped bows to colourful lights carefully placed on the outside of your home, everyone has their own way of displaying their holiday spirit during the Christmas season. If you prefer to go with a more traditional, rustic style, the pallet Christmas tree has been a trend with DIYers for a while now. And it’s easy to understand why!
Not only are they easy and inexpensive to make, they have that wonderfully cozy country charm that just can’t be beat. With endless crafting ideas, you can build a pallet tree for indoor or outdoor purposes… such as a DIY advent tree, Christmas card holder, holiday sign, or a marquee light display.
Our staff at Lyons Timber Mart got into the holiday spirit and DIYed this adorable festive pallet Christmas tree complete with lights and garland. 🎄 Check out the materials list and instructions below to make your own DIY Pallet Christmas tree.
- 4′ level
- Marker or carpenter pencil
- Circular saw
- Rough cut blade
- Exterior spray paint
- Christmas lights
- Drill bit (1/2” – 3/4” depending on size of lights)
- Safety Glasses
1 Gather all the required materials and appropriate PPE.
2 Using the level and marker, mark out the outline of the tree. Setting it from the center top to the third bottom pallet crosser. Then mark out a stump or 2 vertical lines on the second bottom crosser.
3 After marking your cuts, use the circular saw to cut out the tree.
4 Flip over the pallet and cut the back side to match.
5 If needed, add additional screws/nails to hold the boards together.
6 Using the drill and drill bit, bore holes into the slats for the lights.
7 Clean up and sand loose ends or scruff from drilling.
8 Using the spray paint, apply an even coat of paint on the tree.
9 Once dry, string the lights through the holes. Depending on the lights, you may have to take them off the string to fish them through.
10 Decorate, plug it in and enjoy!
